I kept seeing advertisements for the Ryze mushroom coffee but I never bothered to actually buy anything. I wanted to know if the advertised improvement of cognitive function was true. I don't know how I would prove that but it's fine. One day, someone in the office brought in two bags. One was the "coffee" version and the other is the cocoa version. I said I would try it and became the office guinea pig. To make the testing as fair as I could, I tried to drink the coffee version in several ways to see if I could make it palatable. I failed. What follows is are the details of my test.
My first attempt was to follow the instructions. One tablespoon of powder mixed in with a cup of water. I added more water than that and it was simply disgusting. The flavor is just terrible. I mixed in a few liquid creamers and sweeteners to try to make it better but it was still pretty bad. I was able to down the concoction but I suffered for it. That same day, I opened the bag of the cocoa but instead of following the instructions, I made a cup of hot chocolate from our fancy coffee machine then added the cocoa powder to the drink. It was magnitudes better in flavor. I resolved myself to try again then next day.
On day two, after being vigorously intestinally cleaned out, I made a heavily doctored up cup 8 oz of great coffee with stevia sweetener and liquid creamer and added the mushroom coffee powder to the mix. It was actually worse than Day One's cup. I had to throw it out. Staying committed to this experiment, I still wanted to test the brain part of the claim of this mushroom stuff so I made another hot chocolate from the machine and added the cocoa version. It's just better in every way. So far, that's two days of the Ryze Hot Cocoa being okay to drink. I still don't know if the powder makes my brain work better but there is only one way to find out. I will say that I did not notice that there was melatonin in the Hot Cocoa version and it did make me sleepy. I don't recommend drinking the Hot Cocoa version in the morning.
I made one last attempt at making the coffee version worth my time. At noon on day two, I made a second cup of the brew machine's hot chocolate and put about 1 tablespoon of the coffee powder into the cup. We're looking at an 8 oz cup of high quality hot chocolate with this the regular Ryze mushroom coffee powder.
The result is a ruined cup of great hot chocolate. The unpleasant flavor of the powder was present especially as an aftertaste. Pungent is probably the best word to use here. I drank it anyway just to see if I could feel anything brain-wise. I didn't feel smarter.
Were there any benefits at all outside of the intestinal flush? I did note one thing. If I have a cup in the morning, I am not hungry even by noon. There might be a fullness effect going on. From a weight loss perspective, that could be useful.
In summary, I do not recommend the Ryze Mushroom Coffee. I don't know if it's because we got a bad batch or if this is the norm. The taste is awful and there just isn't a way to fix that. Diluting the powder massively helps. This position was confirmed by at least one other adventurous person who came to the same conclusion after their own attempt. As for the Ryze Hot Cocoa, that tastes fine when mixed into something. I can't confirm improved brain function or mood but I can confirm it made me sleepy. What would be nice is if Ryze made a non-melatonin version of the Hot Cocoa. Save yourself the money and try another mushroom coffee.
